Quality Standards for Teaching

Studying at UZH optimally prepares students for their academic and professional futures. This also includes equipping them with analytical and critical thinking skills and the ability to take a joined-up approach. In this way, they can tackle current and future issues beyond what they learn in the classroom in a scientifically sound and responsible way.

Continual Development

At UZH we consider the development of a study program – the curriculum – as a dynamic and continuous process. This involves constantly re-evaluating and integrating current research trends and innovative teaching and learning methods, and coordinating learning objectives, teaching activities and assessments.

The UZH Curriculum as a Guide

In the UZH Curriculum, we have set out six quality attributes that are intended to guide the creation, development and evaluation of study programs.

1. Research-based

The University of Zurich aims to awaken curiosity and promote the analytical and critical thinking skills of its students. Research-based teaching actively involves students in the research process and allows them to deal with important scholarly and scientific issues, methods and findings in an independent manner.

2. Goal-oriented

Studying with a great deal of freedom means acquiring the knowledge and skills needed to achieve one’s future goals. Concrete learning objectives provide clarity about what students can expect from a higher education program and what is expected of them in return.

3. Engaging

Successful students take ownership for their actions and help shape society. Students who are involved in teaching and teaching-related processes strengthen their confidence and acquire important skills for their future life paths.

4. Individualized

Learning is particularly effective when students can connect course content with their specific interests, experiences and prior knowledge. In the context of digital transformation in particular, new possibilities are emerging for achieving the learning objectives of a particular study program via individualized learning paths.

5. Transdisciplinary

Studying at the University of Zurich equips students to analyze and address complex issues in a scientifically sound manner from a variety of perspectives. The inter- and transdisciplinary components of study programs strengthen students’ joined-up thinking skills.

6. International

Successful interpersonal communication between people with different cultural backgrounds is becoming more and more important in our increasingly globalized world. UZH’s wide variety of international touchpoints in teaching, combined with new forms of student mobility, serve to expand students’ horizons and their personal networks.

Quality Management in Education and Teaching

The quality of teaching and study at UZH is regularly assessed and appropriate measures are put in place to continuously improve teaching quality. We rely on the personal responsibility of everyone involved and foster open dialogue.
